Enjoying Yourself on Vacation
Food
-
Always drink bottled water wherever possible. The mineral content of tap water in many countries is often different to that at home and this, alone, can easily lead to an upset stomach.
-
Avoid ice in drinks in countries where the quality of the tap water may be doubtful.
-
Similarly, avoid salad and fruit that may have been washed in such tap water.
-
Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after eating.
-
Carry a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel to clean your hands when it is not possible to wash them.
-
Be careful at barbeques - make sure that the meat and egg dishes are well cooked.
-
Be wary of street food - some authorities even advise avoiding it entirely.
-
Be careful at buffets - if food has been left out a long time and isn't chilled you might want to avoid the shellfish or dishes with cream or eggs in particular.
-
With so much great food on offer there's always the temptation to eat too much. Try to eat just a little of each dish. Eating too much can cause stomach pains.
-
If you can maintain the same sort of meal pattern that you are used to at home it will help your body to adjust to different foods and timings.
