Enjoying Yourself on Vacation
Driving
-
If you are planning on doing any driving whilst you are on shore you should check the licence requirements of the areas you are going to before you leave. Many places require an International Driver's Licence or perhaps a locally purchased permit.
-
Always check which side of the road you should be driving on, and learn the road signs. Ask the hire company if there are any special local rules and signs to watch out for.
-
Don't drink and drive. Some countries may have more relaxed rules than others when it comes to this but it isn't worth the risk and it is far safer simply to avoid alcohol completely when driving.
-
Always carry your driving licence with you and any paperwork you might have been given.
-
Always ensure that your hire car has full insurance cover - many countries use different insurance systems so ask for details at the hire company. Take out as much insurance as you can - not simply for the car itself, but for yourselves and for third parties and public liability.
-
Minor traffic offences can sometimes incur on the spot fines so be prepared for this and have some cash to hand.
-
Be polite and considerate when driving - regardless of what the local drivers do.
