Enjoying Yourself on Vacation
Alcohol & Drugs Abroad
-
Always check what the local laws and customs are with regards to alcohol. Many countries have strict laws and strict penalties for those that break them, sometimes including custodial sentences.
-
Keep in mind that many countries have speed limits and blood alcohol levels that are lower than those in the US or in the UK.
-
Remember that in hot countries you are likely to be affected more quickly by alcohol so bear in mind how much you consume. It's a good idea to alternate alcoholic drinks with water to ensure you keep hydrated and limit your alcohol intake.
-
Remember that alcohol makes you more vulnerable by slowing your reactions and befuddling your thinking. It does this wherever you consume it but when you are abroad and in strange countries it makes you an easy target for pickpockets and other potential wrongdoers.
-
Don't try to take any alcohol with you into any countries where it is prohibited - particularly in the Middle East and other Muslim nations.
-
Be aware of different strengths - for example beer can vary greatly in its strength in different countries. Know your limits.
-
Avoid any involvement with drugs. Penalties can be extremely severe: in some countries the death sentence is still used for drug-related matters. Don't carry any parcels or packages for strangers - no matter what story they tell you about the urgency of it getting to someone on the ship or back to your country. If you are offered drugs refuse them.
